Chapter Twenty-Six
âLead piping,â said Belinda, finishing Sandraâs sentence and, of course, repeating the murder weapon.
Sandra stared first at her and then at Harry, who was peering over Belindaâs shoulder at the newly released murder suspect.
âNow, listen,â said Sandra, banging her glass down on the bar. âDonât look at me. Iâve hardly spoken toââ
âNever mind that now,â said Harry, making a move towards the kitchen. âJust donât leave before the police arrive.â
âYouâre not going anywhere without me,â said Belinda, putting a hand out to stop him brushing past her. âWeâre a team, and donât you forget it.â
In spite of the seriousness of another murder, she saw Harry attempt a smile. He put a hand on her arm, and a shiver ran through her on this warmest of evenings.
âYouâre right,â he said.
âI usually am,â she said, and added, âOh, about what?â
âWeâre a team, so come on.â
The pair of them forged a path through the gawking drinkers, Harry pausing to check if anyone had called the police and an ambulance.
Belinda left Harry talking to the slightly hysterical woman who had screamed out from the kitchen door. On her way past, she overheard the woman tell Harry that she was a new member of staff and had only started that morning.
Making a mental note of the sobbed conversation, Belinda rushed over to where Lennie lay beside the industrial-sized glass washer, which had recently come to a stop and was in drying mode.
Lennie was on his front, left side of his face to the floor, right side now being inspected by Belinda as she crouched down next to him.
The lead piping was a couple of feet from his head, blood on one end of it.
âPolice are on their way,â said Harry, coming over to her. âWe should check for a pulse.â
âNo need,â said Belinda. âI can see heâs breathing. Look, heâs got saliva coming out of his mouth. I can see air bubbles. Heâs very much alive.â
Harry took Belindaâs word for it and said, âWe should get him in the recovery position.â
âShould we?â she said. âI was looking forward to you giving him mouth to mouth.â
âIf heâs still breathing, thatâs not only unnecessary but some sort of assault.â
âSome sort of assault?â she said, standing back up. âThat doesnât sound very police-ish.â
Harry shrugged. âI mostly dealt with murders. If there wasnât a corpse at the end of it, the finer points were largely forgotten.â
âReassuring,â she said. âHere come the paramedics.â
They stood aside to allow the crew to do their work, checking on the patient and making sure he had a pulse. There was little that Harry and Belinda could do, except stand back and hope that Lennie pulled through.
It wasnât long before the police arrived. Belinda earned herself a chastising look from Harry when she cooeed at PC Vince Green. The tired, worn-out-looking police officer clearly couldnât quite believe his eyes. Here he was once again in a pub with Belinda, who for the second time in two days had found herself a witness in the midst of a serious criminal investigation.
